http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/search.php?q=Bee+Balm&Search=Search+PlantFiles This is the plant listing at davesgarden.com. There are several growers that have a red variety of it for trade and some that are selling it. How much water does it need?

Note the list of historic pass along plants that is posted on this site. Those plants were successful then, and continue to be, because they tolerate sun, heat, and alkaline soil. Many of them are part of the xeriscape gardens.

I doubt it. The sun dries them out too quickly. Heavy mulch helps. I had a few the past 3 years in the partial sun under a rose bush, in the most watered raised bed I have, and the last one appears to be dying this week. They were a novelty since ...

Thanks for the advice, Peggy! My interest in West Texas goes way back. Before I came to ABC in 1977, I was a reporter at WFAA-TV in Dallas and was responsible for a series of reports I called 'Texas Tales,' which involved traveling around the state and digging up old legends and anecdotes about Texas history (I was born in Oklahoma, but have always felt like a transplanted Texan). I loved the Texas Panhandle area especially, all the way up to the Palo Duro Canyon, and have always had in mind wanting to set a story in that general location (some of my ABC stories have been done as movies, most recently 'The Pursuit of Happyness'). Anyway, the plants my gardener would be working on or nurturing when the book starts are plants that would be growing or need tending in the month of August. I'm also interested in what the most appealing aspects of flowers or plants might be...i.e., the colors, scents, and how they affect gardener's choices. All part of creating a character. I will visit the sites you recommend; and if you are amenable to a telephone conversation, I can give you a toll-free 800 number where I can be reached at a time of your convenience to discuss some of these choices and especially the reasons they are important to the gardener who makes them.
Again, thanks!

Ms. Wennerlind...I am a writer in New York researching a novel (fiction) in which a West Texas character is an avid gardener. I joined your site to begin some research and would like to contact you about the flowers such a character might plant and how she would tend them at different times of year. My name is Bob Brown...I also work as a correspondent for ABC News...My work email address is Bob.Brown@ABC.Com; or I can be reached at brownnyc@gmail.com. My telephone is (212) 456-7377. If you wouldn't mind discussing some of these details, please send an email message to either address. The book is in its very early stages. If and when it is published, I would be happy to give you and your organization credit. Thanks very much for your attention.

We also hope everyone adds a few iris to their garden so they can enjoy these wonderful flowers. WTIS plans to have a rhizome sale August 22nd at Mannings Garden Center.
