This sounds wonderful! Thanks for sharing it on your blog. It's nice to see local gardening events going on around here. You might consider posting it on the forum as well so more people will see it. Blessings, Angela

Thanks so much for your help, John. I'm glad to know this is not uncommon and that many grafted trees might have similar problems. It helps me feel that it might not all be my fault. I will consult with the nursery. Maybe it's not too late to get an…

Angellady. I would think that your observation is correct about the graft and the shoots that you see sprouting from the ase of the stock tree in which it was attached too. It is not an uncommon occurance. I have tried a few variations of pecan tree…

I am so upset. Someone please help. I bought a Burbank Plum tree since Mr. Burbank was so awesome, I just had to have his cultivar of anything that I could pick up at a nursery locally and that would grow in this hot desert. Well, all my other tree…

Thanks, Burr. I have one of those. I checked it out on Wikipedia and agree that you're right on one of the trees in my yard that just came up all on it's own. I wonder if it's the tree that you're referring to, Oscar. Did you ever get a picture of i…

Well, I can't say I've gardened pregnant, but I sure wouldn't let it stop you. I will admit how much of a weenie I am here. I do most of my gardening in the evening or early morning when it's cool (not at peak day hours because I can't take it!). I…

I think passion flower vines do very well out here. I know of two PFV that are growing very well out here, although they aren't in MY yard. I just got a cutting and hope it roots for me. Blessings, Angela

Angelady. I learned a lot about landscape basic and design in the backyard at home at 3339 Providence in Midland during the 60's and 70's. Believe it or Not. Not long after we moved to Midland ( after the Great Flood of 68) we began to transform our front and back yard into an area that was eye pleasing and a personal refuge from the day to day grind.

Under Mom's direction we learned to dig out flower beds; construct our sidewalk forms and pour the concrete. I'm sure Mom broke some child labor laws somewhere down the line. :) It was hot and sweaty work to say the least.

From that foundation, a couple of Neil Sperry books, a little experimentation, and a little bit of imagination, I have been able to create a garden space in the back yard here in East Texas.

I've asked people about going to some seminars at SFA to attain a Master Gardner's designation. Most will tell you that experience is the best teacher and the seminars tend to help focus and hone your acquire skills.

The main thing about gardening is learning what will work for your area of the country. I have tried a couple of times to grow Rhodey's in the hot and humid enviorment of East Texas. After a couple of months of 95 degree weather and 60 percent humidty, they simply gave up th ghost. I'm stubborn when it comes to ,....most everything, but I finally got it through my thick skull that this relationship was not going to work. Azaleas (Cousins to the Rhodeys) are the forte of this area of Texas. We have plenty of rain, acid soil and they tolerate the heat quite well.

As far as landcaping is concerned, just remember that nature rarely creates straight lines or corners. Always attempt to softnen the hard edges of your home's exterior with trees and shrubs..

Also understand about plant placement and their growth patterns. I have made mistakes of not gauging correctly how big a certain plant, shrub or tree will reachat maturity.

Finally and most importantly, you need to have a passion for the art work that is gardening and the discipline and patients to see your projects through. Gardening ain't for sissies. Now that would be a good title to a book. :)

I'm a little new at this, too. We always had a big vegetable garden growing up, but I haven't been able to have one in years because as an adult I've always lived in various apartments.

Since I moved to Midland about six months back though, I've got a nice sunny patio and I'm hoping to get a little growing going back there.

I would be happy to give you some. My daughter and my sister are coming to dig some up. When would be a good time for you. I do consult for Reg. 18 working with Visually Impaired students on assistive technology. I will be away all do tomorrow, and Friday afternoon. Another other time will be great.

Planting Tons of Stuff I received from a Plant Round Robin Swap

I've been so busy planting, planting, planting! It's been about a week now since I got my huge box of goodies in the mail. Plenty of little rooted plants and tons of cuttings that need to root. I tell you, I'm saying some prayers for these wonderful plants!

I hope that all the cuttings root well and grow out here in our West Texas desert. I am very scared right now! I've wanted soooo many of these fruit plants in particular, that it'll just break my heart if they don't make it. I have them pott… Continue
