I started my tomato seeds in a moist paper towel inside a baggy taped to a partially shaded window. It gave the seeds enough warmth and moisture to germinate. When I see the roots starting to develop, I pot them up in small homemade newspaper pots. When they get a few inches high, harden them off and then plant them out in the garden. If you want more plants, just take a cutting, dip it in rooting hormone or honey, then plant into another pot. Protect it by having it in shade under a tree until it roots well, then harden it off and plant it out in the garden as well. You can tons of tomato plants from just one germinated seed!

tomatoes love virgin midland soil.

If you need to get rid of bermuda and weeds first, soak your ground and put down plastic, black or clear. now is a good time for that to prepare for later. the sun cooks and clears your land.
If you have a bare spot where you want grass...plant tomatoes and next year you will have bermuda haha ;D

I agree that cherry tomatoes are a great place to start. I've always had good luck with them, even in this West Texas climate.

Since you're a first time gardener, I suggest getting seedlings from a garden center.
