Hi, what are the best plant nurseries in Odessa / Midland for plants that have good quality and reasonable prices? I am from out of town and I am hoping for some suggestions. Thank you!
Well, thank you for the Wal Mart suggestion....hmmm... yeah, I could have come up with that on my own. But in case anyone else needs the answer to this question - I went to Ace Hardware and bought crepe myrtles that were about 4 foot in height for 2.75 each; Bouganvillas that were taller than me (white) for 6 dollars each. I also made Alldredge gardens early bird sale and bought crepe myrtles that are huge for 29 dollars. Lets see ... I loved the down to earth nursery in south Odessa. Home depot had boxwoods (Japanese) for 2.50 each (1 gallon). I wish everyone else luck in buying your treasures!
Saturday I went to Allredge Gardens and they had several discount tables full of plants for under $2 and I went to Lowe's today and picked up seven LARGE ferns for $4 each. They had racks of plants at discount - that needed some TLC. Also, most of the time Lowe's has better Crape Myrtles then Allredge if you know the species for the Odessa/Midland area. Casa Verde has very knowledgeable people and they will take you by the hand. I was buying all my pre and post weed killers and fertilizers from the Co-op but changed over to Casa Verde and it has definately improved my grass and helped to DESTROY the burrs in the dog lot. Also, I subscribe to Neil Perry's semi-monthly newsletter and have two of his books on W.TX plants, also my husband and I attended the TX Cooperative Ext. program lead by Deborah Frost and learned a lot of "don'ts." I never miss the yearly sale held at the Horseshoe by the Ext. Service. Their plants are top notch W. TX grown, at very reasonable prices and you have over a dozen Master Gardeners on hand to answer any question. Great service and the best people. You can also call them and get a Master Gardener on the line who will help you out. Best of luck, it's not easy converting over to gardening in the Odessa/Midland area. I would love to see this group become more inter-active - is this group on the general forum listing?
